What it costs

Immediate attention and access to cool running water or a cool-water bath; the first-aid step itself costs no money.

What you get

For an unbroken minor burn, run cool water over the area or soak it in a cool water bath. Keep it under water for at least 5 to 30 minutes. A clean, cold, wet towel can help reduce pain.

Notes

Use cool water, not ice water. Do not apply oil, butter, ice, medicines, cream, oil spray, or a household remedy to a severe burn. Do not disturb blistered or dead skin. Call 911 or the local emergency number for a very large or severe burn, or when you are not sure how serious it is.
