Give fast, hard chest compressions during CPR
If someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally, call 911 or the local emergency number, then give fast, hard chest compressions at 100 to 120 per minute.
What it costs
Immediate physical effort and attention while waiting for trained medical help; the emergency procedure itself costs no money.
What you get
For an unresponsive person who is not breathing or is having trouble breathing, call 911 or the local emergency number, then give 30 chest compressions followed by 2 breaths. Press down about 2 inches (5 centimeters) into the chest, let it rise completely, and do 100 to 120 compressions per minute.
Notes
Continue cycles of 30 compressions and 2 breaths until the person recovers or help arrives. Pauses for rescue breaths should be less than 10 seconds. The linked MedlinePlus procedure covers an adult and a child after the onset of puberty; infants and younger children have separate procedures. If an AED is available, use it as soon as possible.
