What it costs

Time to search the charity by its official name or employer identification number before donating. The IRS search tool is free to use.

What you get

The IRS tool lets you check an organization's tax-exempt status and filings, including whether it is eligible to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions. You can search by employer identification number or organization name.

Notes

Use the organization's legal name or EIN rather than assuming its popular name will appear. The IRS says donors may rely on Publication 78 data when determining deductibility, but some eligible donees may not be listed. Keep the records needed to support a deduction and check the current IRS guidance before filing.
