What it costs

Time to review your reports, gather supporting documents, and send a dispute to each bureau that has the mistake.

What you get

You have the right to get free copies of your credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus once every 12 months. The FTC also says the bureaus have permanently extended a program that lets you check each report once a week for free.

Notes

Dispute the mistake with each credit bureau that has it and with the business that reported the inaccurate information. If you mail the dispute, keep copies of what you send and use the address on your report or the bureau's dispute address.
