Take job-protected FMLA leave for family or medical needs
Eligible employees can take up to 12 weeks of job-protected FMLA leave after meeting the one-year and 1,250-hour work requirements at a covered employer.
What it costs
The leave is unpaid under the FMLA, and you need time to notify your employer and provide any required certification.
What you get
Eligible employees can take up to 12 workweeks of job-protected leave in a 12-month period for qualifying family and medical reasons. The eligibility rules include working for the employer for at least 12 months, working at least 1,250 hours during the previous 12 months, and working at a location where the employer has at least 50 employees within 75 miles.
Notes
The FMLA applies to covered employers and qualifying reasons for leave; not every worker or employer is covered. Check the Department of Labor's current eligibility and notice rules, and ask your employer about the process before leave begins when the need is foreseeable.
