Get a flu vaccine every season
Everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine every season, with rare exceptions.
What it costs
Time to arrange a seasonal flu vaccination and any out-of-pocket cost that applies where you live.
What you get
CDC says, “Everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine every season with rare exceptions.” The page also says flu vaccination can reduce the risk of going to the doctor with flu by 40% to 60% during seasons when the vaccine viruses are similar to circulating viruses.
Notes
The current CDC page was last reviewed on Sept. 1, 2026. It includes a 2019–2020 example and a 40% to 60% range. Effectiveness varies by season, and the range applies to seasons when the vaccine viruses are similar to the circulating viruses, so treat it as typical rather than a promise.
